SAPD: Man claims he has a bomb during traffic stop on the north side, prompting bomb squad response

Police shut down San Pedro Avenue from Jackson Keller Road to the El Montan Motel due to the incident but it has since been reopened.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police say bomb squad responded to a call for a suspicious package found by an Alamo Colleges police officer during a traffic stop on the north side Wednesday morning.

SAPD Public information Officer Nick Soliz said an ACPD officer observed a truck driving erratically and swerving in the middle of the roadway along the 6700 block of San Pedro Avenue around 9 a.m.

As the officer made a traffic stop on the truck, Soliz said the 31-year-old man driving was sitting in the middle seat and told the officer he had a bomb in the vehicle.

As a precaution, Soliz said the officer detained the suspect and called SAPD Bomb Squad.

When the bomb squad arrived, they did a thorough check of the vehicle. A suspicious package was found that Soliz described as a small luggage suitcase with wires. "Any reasonable person would've believed that was a bomb," said Soliz.

Bomb Squad cleared the vehicle and found that the suspicious was not a bomb.

Soliz said the suspect was taken into ACPD custody for an emergency detention but is not facing any charges at this time.

No schools in the area were threatened by the isolated incident, according to police.

San Pedro Avenue was shut down completely from Jackson Keller Road to the El Montan Motel before being reopened after bomb squad found there was no explosive device.
