'It could have gone a lot worse': How a quick-thinking kidnapping victim helped police track her down

Police say an ex-boyfriend took a woman against her will. What she decided to do next as she sat in his passenger's seat may have saved her life, officials say.

SAN ANTONIO — A frightening situation that crossed city lines could have ended in tragedy.

Police say thanks to a woman's quick thinking, investigators were able to track her every move during her kidnapping.

The crime began in San Antonio and ended peacefully in Kirby.

Police say a man broke the window to get into his ex-girlfriend's house in San Antonio, then took her against her will.

What the woman did as she sat in his passengers seat, investigators say, may have saved her life.

Kirby Police Chief, Roxanne Cardona, knows not every kidnapping case ends like this one.

"I think it's unnerving," said Cardona. "I am grateful that she had the thought process to actually self-preserve, so her contacting us made a huge difference. It could have gone a lot worse."

Police say an 18-year-old woman was kidnapped by an ex-boyfriend who was driving a white ford mustang.

The victim, who sat in the passengers seat, acted quickly to tell someone where she was.

"She was able to utilize the suspect's phone and contact either her roommate or her friend at home. The officer was able to get information that way," Cardona explained.

As an SAPD officer was fed information from the friend, he fed everything to Kirby.

"At that point, Officer Christensen from SAPD contacted our dispatch, himself personally, and gave live updates the entire time," said Cardona.

Kirby Police tracked the mustang to a gas station on Springfield Road and FM 78. They followed the vehicle to the 4800 block of Borchers Drive.

"At that point she was in danger, so they conducted their felony stop," Cardona explained. "We were able to get the victim out safely and the suspect in custody."

The suspect surrendered peacefully.

Police say the victim and suspect have a 2-year-old together, but the child was at a different location the entire time.

Investigators say the victim's mother lives in Kirby and the victim may have persuaded the suspect to take her to family.

"It was huge teamwork in this situation where everyone came out safe," added Cardona.

The suspect identified himself to Kirby Police as 24-year-old David Franco. SAPD is handling the investigation from here; KENS 5 is inquiring about the charges the suspect will face.

Police say if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, dial 911 and just leave the phone on. Officials can listen in and track where you are.
