Officer recovering after being shot responding to domestic violence call

SAPD says the officer is in good spirits but has a long road of recovery ahead of her.

SAN ANTONIO — SAPD released an update Monday on the officer wounded in a shootout between police and a 25-year-old suspect early Sunday morning.

The department identified the injured officer as Viviana Rodriguez. She is awaiting further medical care while she is being treated at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC).

When officers arrived to the apartment at 3 a.m. Sunday on Patricia Drive, they learned the suspect’s girlfriend had been assaulted inside.

When police entered the apartment, according to Chief McManus, they saw the suspect lying on the bed with a rifle by his side. The man began shooting at the officers, who returned fire. One of the officers was hit.

SWAT was called, and made entry into the apartment where they found the suspect dead. Chief McManus says the three officers involved in the shooting all have less than three years with the department.

The other two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while Rodriguez remains in the hospital, according to SAPD.

Bart Vasquez is the executive director with the 100 Club of San Antonio, a nonprofit organization that serves first responders families by helping them financially when their loved ones are injured in the line of duty. He visited the recovering officer and her family. He is asking the community to pray for her.

“That’s a good thing for us that families of first responders don’t know we exist because that means they are not thinking about what could happen," Vasquez said. "But when they find out we exist and they find out what we do, and they find that we’re 100% funded by the community they are tremendously moved and they are grateful for what the community and the 100 club do for them.”

The medical examiner has identified the 25-year-old suspect as Jorge Jose Chacon Gutierrez.

KENS 5 reached out to SAPD asking what happened to the girlfriend of Gutierrez, the victim of the domestic violence call, but have not heard back. It also remains unclear if the suspect took his own life or was killed by one of the rounds from law enforcement.

The investigation remains ongoing.
