SAN ANTONIO — Alaia Hernandez spent her first birthday in the hospital. Her condition with hypogammaglobulinemia can change drastically from one day to another.

"Her body just doesn’t create any antibodies for herself to fight infections," said her mother, Ariana Apolinar.

Apolinar says her daughter has had gut infections since she was 4-months-old.

"She’s so familiar with the hospital that the second that the doors open, she starts freaking out because she’s scared,” she said.

Carrying a binder of Hernandez's medical records, she says it's difficult for doctors to see her, because Alaia is afraid of them.

“Realistically, I wish she never had to go through anything," Apolinar said. "Right now what I want most for her is to get these treatments only because I know that’s the only thing that’s going to help her.”

The goal the family is trying to reach is $8,500 to cover Hernandez's medical costs including antibody infusions. To learn more, click here.
