SAN ANTONIO — Popular San Antonio hot dog eatery "El Chunky" was burglarized early Tuesday morning, according to San Antonio Police.
The owner Manuel Rodriguez said surveillance video shows the man that broke into his shop.
"When I saw I got angry," he said. "Like 'No. I can't believe it.' This is the first time this has happened to us."
The restaurant is located off at 2620 South Presa Street and is known for its huge Mexican-style hotdogs. As for the burglary, Rodriguez said the surveillance video shows the thief canvassing his hot dog shop.
He said at one point, the burglar looks over in his patio area. Before the thief broke in, Rodriguez says he went after the electricity.
"He took the power out from the back of the building cutting the locks," Rodriguez said. "And he put the power out, so the cameras couldn't catch him inside."
Rodriguez said the thief then got in by breaking a small window used for pick-up orders.
"He forced the window, breaking the window lock and up put his hand in and opened the door," Rodriguez said.
Despite the power being out, the alarm system was not. He said sensors inside are battery operated. During the burglary, the alarm was going off.
Rodriguez said the thief took off with the cash register.
"There was like $250 inside and the price of the cash register is like $300 by itself," he said.
Rodriguez admits while the burglary wasn't much, it does have a big impact on his small business.
"We put a lot of sweat and tears, efforts this is like my baby," he said.
El Chunky will re-open Thursday. The owner said he does have insurance, which will help. He said on Tuesday morning officers were able to dust for fingerprints.
San Antonio Police said the investigation is ongoing.
