This weekend in SA: Light up the night at a lantern festival, celebrate local heroes at a river parade and more

It's fitting that San Antonians can look forward to a weekend of comfortable, fall-like mornings with all the festive outdoor events lined up.

SAN ANTONIO — What better way to bask in the cooler temperatures brought in by this week’s front than getting the family out for some festivities?

The weekend ahead is jam-packed with plenty of family-friendly festivals, parades and more. Here are our top picks of events that you won’t want to miss.

San Antonio Home and Garden Show

It’s time to get inspired with the trendiest looks for your home and landscape for the fall and winter season as the San Antonio Home and Garden Show returns to the Alamodome.

The show features thousands of square feet of exhibits and opportunities to get your hands on the latest products and services for all your home, garden, design and DIY needs.

When: Friday (noon - 8 p.m.), Saturday (10 a.m. - 8 p.m.) and Sunday(11 a.m. - 6 p.m.)

Where: Alamodome (100 Montana Street)

41st Annual Jazz’SAlive

The city's outdoor jazz festival returns Friday and Saturday to Civic Park at Hemisfair.  This free family-friendly event, hosted by the San Antonio Parks Foundation, aims to ensure that jazz is alive in the Alamo City.

There’s a long list of award-winning musicians, bands, composers, instrumentalists and more, both local and from around the world, that are set to perform at the festival—making for two enchanting days of celebrating jazz music.

When: Friday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Where: Civic Park at Hemisfair (630 East Nueva Street)

Rey Feo Superhero River Parade & Festival

See the San Antonio River transformed into a vibrant, action-packed spectacle for the launch of the Rey Feo Superheroes River Parade for Education, happening on Saturday.

There will be a pre-parade festival at La Villita before the parade kicks off in the afternoon down at the Arneson River Theatre.

The event highlights local heroes such as firefighters, police officers, healthcare workers, and educators, acknowledging their dedication and contributions to the community. Floats gliding along the river will feature popular superheroes from comics, movies and TV shows, delighting spectators of all ages.

When: Saturday (La Villita festival from noon to 11 p.m. / river parade from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.)

Where: Arneson River Theatre at La Villita (418 Villita Street)

Cost: The festival is free. Seating for the parade along the river and theater cost $20 and can be purchased here.

The San Antonio Water Lantern Festival

Join the community for an unforgettable celebration of light and hope. The Water Lantern Festival will light up the night at Millers Pond Park on Saturday night.

Attendees can look forward to food trucks, music, family activities and of course thousands of lanterns all making for a peaceful night out highlighting love, hope and happiness.

When: Saturday, September 28 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Where: Millers Pond Park (6175 Old Pearsall Road)

Cost: Adult tickets are currently priced at around $30 and can be purchased here. Children under 8 years of age get in free.

13th Annual Parktoberfest

Prost! Enjoy a biergarten along the San Antonio River and celebrate German culture at Parktoberfest, happening Sunday at Brackenridge Park.

There will be free samples from local breweries, live German music and food for purchase. 

When: Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Where: Brackenridge Park (3910 North St. Mary’s Street) at the Koehler and Cypress Pavilions.

The Magik Theatre will kick off its 2024-2025 season with the world premiere of Lyric & the Keys on Saturday night. The heartwarming musical will run through Oct. 13.

Also happening Saturday, Música Mexicana rising star Ivan Conejo will play at the Frost Bank Center on his “Mirada Tour.”

Get your tickets to the Wild & Scenic Film Festival presented by the San Antonio River Authority for an unforgettable evening featuring a series of inspiring films that celebrate environmental activism and a deep love for nature. The festival includes a community market, art, live music and a poetry reading.

Finally, let the fall festivities begin! Take the trip to New Braunfels for the Sundrop Springs Fall Festival. The 22-acre farm is packed with fun attractions including a hayride, fall maze, jumping pillow, corn clay pit, live entertainment and more. There will also be Halloween thrills such as a spooky pumpkin trail, hillbilly hayride and a haunted hay maze. The event runs until Oct. 27.
