SAN ANTONIO — On Friday Mar. 1. The San Antonio Zoo celebrated a huge milestone in its 110-year history as they broke ground for the Congo Falls gorilla habitat coming to the zoo in 2025.
The $30-million project is set to “redefine the landscape of gorilla habitats in the United States with its unparalleled scale and innovation,” according to San Antonio Zoo President and CEO, Tim Morrow.
The 2-acre habitat will be the new home of 8 western lowland gorillas and is set to include a 60-foot gorilla tower that gives the animals a skyline view of the Alamo city.
According to Morrow, the new habitat’s expansive roaming areas and interactive browsing garden, will allow for a “truly immersive experience for both visitors and animals.”
In 1990 the last gorilla resident of the San Antonio Zoo, Mopie, was moved to the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington, D.C. In a press release regarding the groundbreaking of Congo Falls, the zoo referred to the event as a, “defining moment in the zoo's commitment to reintroducing the presence of gorillas to the San Antonio community.”
