A building in the San Antonio Zoo known as the “Monkey House” was built over 60 years ago. The historic cages will be decommissioned soon.
At the time the building was constructed, it was not uncommon for zoos around the world to display monkeys in these square cages. This Monkey House building currently has only two groups of monkeys that will be transferred to other zoos. There will still be plenty to see in the Alamo City, including primates.
“As we have grown and developed, we now have primate exhibits all over the zoo. It’s time for us to retire the exhibits here at the Monkey House,” SA Zoo VP of Marketing Brian Cater said. “What you’re going to see from the San Antonio Zoo going forward in our animal habitats are more naturalistic habitats that are not only good for the animals, but they’re also great for the guests, to be able to experience them in the best way possible.”
