San Benito Police officer shot, killed

He was fatally shot in the line of duty Tuesday night.

SAN BENITO, Texas — A San Benito Police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Tuesday night.

The officer was involved in a vehicle pursuit.

Brownsville Police posted this message on Facebook:

"Our hearts are heavy today as we express our deepest condolences to the San Benito Police Department and the loved ones of fallen Lieutenant Milton Resendez. He made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his community last night, and our entire law enforcement family grieves alongside you. Lieutenant Resendez dedicated his life to protecting and serving, and his legacy of honor and commitment will forever be remembered.  We want to remind our community that we stand together in unity and support during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to family, friends, and colleagues of Lieutenant Resendez. We honor his service and remember his dedication to keeping our community safe."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott released this statement:

"Hearts across Texas grieve with the family and loved ones of the San Benito Police Officer whose life was tragically taken while protecting his fellow Texans. This senseless act is a solemn reminder of the selfless risks our law enforcement officers take every single day when they put on the badge. I thank the Texas Department of Public Safety, the San Benito Police Department, and all law enforcement involved in the swift apprehension and arrest of the criminals so justice can be served. Please join Cecilia and me in praying for this brave hero's family and the entire San Benito community during this heartbreaking time."

The Weslaco Police Department posted a message on their Facebook page

"We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic loss of a San Benito Police Officer who was fatally shot in the line of duty early this morning. This heartbreaking incident has left our law enforcement community in shock and mourning. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and fellow officers of the fallen hero during this difficult time. His sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face daily to ensure the safety of our communities. We urge our community to come together to honor the memory of this fallen hero and offer support to those who are grieving. Rest easy, dear officer, and thank you for your sacrifice."
