SAPD makes arrest in deadly September shooting of San Antonio teen

Police say they don't believe the victim and suspect knew each other prior to the night of Sept. 22.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police say they’ve arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a south side shooting in late September that left a teen dead.

According to SAPD, Alonzo Cantu arrived at the home of Sonny Vidales on Sept. 22 to buy an undisclosed item from him. When the suspect received said item, he shot into the home, fatally striking Vidales, who was 15.

Vidales' mom Christine said she was in tears when she heard Cantu was caught.

"I lost my son forever but she has lost her son as well," she said. "Because the day he decided to take my son's life. He took his life."

She said she knew this day would come.

"Everyday I prayed for him and his family," she said. "I prayed Lord, put conviction in his spirit, put conviction in his spirit."

The mom is calling on Cantu to take responsibility for his actions and to tell detectives everything.

"Even though you took a part of my life away, you took my son from me, I can't hate you," she said. "I can't. I just want you to do what's right."

Police say they didn’t know each other prior to the incident, but don’t believe it was gang-related. Evidence on Vidales’s phone helped lead investigators to Cantu, authorities said.

SAPD stressed that others who may know more about the situation contact the department at (210)207-7635. Officers added that if community members meet up to buy items over the internet, they do so at SAPD substations or safe zones.
