SAPD: Man arrested after hours-long standoff on southwest side where woman was shot in head

Police said a SWAT team assisted with the scene.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was taken into custody after a nearly six-hour standoff at a southwest-home Tuesday afternoon.

The San Antonio police initially responded to the 600 block of Taft Boulevard, near Frio City Road, around 6:15 a.m. for reports of a shooting. Police said a SWAT team assisted with the scene.

Chief William McManus said 35-year-old Carlos Herrera pistol whipped his significant other, identified as a woman in her 30s, before shooting her in the head and fleeing to a house where several people lived.

Police said the residents of the home all exited the house. The woman was taken to the hospital - at last check she was in critical but stable condition.

McManus said the police used tear gas to force the man to surrender but the man was hunkered down in a crawlspace in the attic. It was later revealed the man had used sweaters to protect himself from the gas.

Police said SWAT was clearing the home room by room and used a dog to locate the man.

Upon discovery, the man was promptly taken into custody, authorities said.

"The good news is we got him out unharmed and he is now under arrest," McManus said.

Police say the man is likely to face a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

No other injuries were reported.
