SAPD reminds families how to trick-or-treat safely

Police say there will be an increased police presence in neighborhoods around San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO — Halloween is all about wearing costumes and collecting candy for the kids, but for parents, safety is a big concern.

This morning, San Antonio Police are reminding families how to safely trick-or-treat.

SAPD will be increasing their presence Tuesday night.

SAFFE Unit officers will be out to make sure everyone is safe. These patrols work hand-in-hand with neighborhoods to prevent crime.

Halloween is an especially important time for police.  That’s because they want everyone to enjoy the holiday with peace of mind.

Officers want you to keep these tips in mind as you head out tonight:

  • See and be seen - That means making sure you're aware of your surroundings
  • Wear things like glow sticks and reflective attire
  • Be aware
  • Watch out for cars coming in and leaving driveways
  • And finally ,plan your route

"Plan ahead. Right? Plan And you're trick or treating route in advance. Observe those those plans and, you know, make sure you account for every single family, a member from every house to every house. Every street to every street.”

Pedestrian traffic crashes trend up in October.

In fact, this month is considered one of the deadliest months of the year for pedestrian involved crashes.

Part of the reason is a decrease in daylight hours, which has more folks walking in the dark.

One final tip: candy! Don’t be a trick.. Check your treats.

Police say be proactive with your child’s candy. If it doesn’t look like a kit kat then its probably not a kit kat.
