SAN ANTONIO — A 42-year-old man was shot by police early Thursday morning after allegedly pulling a gun on an officer who was pulling him over.
Police say that an officer tried to pull him over a little earlier but he got away and the chase was called off.
Hours later, the man was spotted again around 12:15 a.m. on Padre Drive at Napier Avenue near Mission County Park on the south side of town.
Chief William McManus says the driver pulled over, but when the officer approached his truck, the man allegedly pointed a gun at him.
And that’s when the officer was forced to shoot.
“He didn’t stop immediately but when he did stop, as the officer approached, he pointed a gun out the window at the officer, a handgun and at that point the officer fired struck the individual in the shoulder," said Chief McManus.
The chief says the suspect is in stable condition at the hospital.
He did not identify the man but says he is a documented gang member and has a police record. Once he's released from the hospital he will be booked for aggravated assault of a public servant and felon in possession of a firearm.
The officer has been on the force for two years. As part of department policy will be put on admin duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
This is a developing story.
