Neighbors concerned after latest fatal shooting on southwest side as police search for suspect

A resident who has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years says the area has only gotten worse.

SAN ANTONIO — A young man is dead after being found with at least three gunshot wounds on the southwest side of town early Thursday morning.

San Antonio Police were called out to the 200 block of Carranza Street, not far from Frio City Road, around 3 a.m. for reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found the 18-year-old victim with multiple gunshot wounds. He has been identified as Xavier Skelton.

The victim's family told investigators an unknown car drove up in front of their home and pushed him out of the vehicle before zooming off with no explanation.

First responders rushed the victim to University Hospital with at least three bullet wounds, in critical condition. Officials tell us he died at the hospital.

Police say they found at least one shell casing at the scene, but aren't sure exactly what happened. There were no witnesses and no nearby cameras caught any activity.

Ruben Roque, who's lived in the neighborhood for 40 years, said the area has only gotten worse; from people not taking care of their property to the sound of gunshots.

“You can tell that somebody’s shooting off their gun and throwing it up in the air and who knows where they’re going to land, the bullets and that’s maybe every other day," Roque said.

He says he can't imagine the pain the victim's family must be going through right now.

“I feel very saddened. I feel for the parents that lost a son dearly that they probably loved," Roque said.

He's pushing for additional law enforcement patrols in the neighborhood to deter crime. Roque also hopes District 5 government officials engage more with the neighborhood that he said has become less safe.

“That would help, yes, more police patrol. Every four hours, every five hours," Roque said.

If you know anything that could help authorities in their investigation, please give police a call.
