The truck driver told officers the victim was lying in the road and there was no way to avoid hitting him.

SAN ANTONIO — A man who was lying in the road was struck and killed by the driver of an 18-wheeler truck early Sunday morning, police say.

Officers were dispatched around 5:25 a.m. to the 6000 block of I-35 North access road just north of downtown for a major accident involving a semi-truck that hit a pedestrian..

When officers arrived, they found the victim in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

Witnesses told police the victim was lying in the roadway, causing vehicles to swerve around him. The driver of the 18-wheeler was traveling on Rittiman Road, and was unable to avoid hitting the victim. 

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

The victim has not been positively identified.

This investigation remains ongoing.
