SAPD: Teen arrested after burglarizing multiple vehicles in school parking lot

Police say a 15-year-old was taken into custody, alleging him of carjacking and burglary.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police arrested a minor after he allegedly tried to carjack two people and burglarized multiple vehicles in a school parking lot Friday morning.

Police first responded to a call for an aggravated robbery around 6:30 a.m. Officials say the teen, a 15-year-old, attempted to carjack someone, then afterwards ended up at a different location around 8 a.m. and attempted to carjack another person.

According to authorities, the juvenile then drove to J. B. Passmore Elementary School and burglarized approximately five vehicles in the school parking lot around 8:30 a.m.

Police say a teacher entered the parking lot and saw the suspect. Authorities were able to obtain surveillance footage confirming they were the same suspects from the previous robberies.

An undercover detective spotted the suspect's vehicle at a shopping center on Military Drive and Highway 90 and called it in. Patrol officers responded to that call, which led to a brief pursuit before the suspect bailed out of the vehicle and ran into a residence on Woodgate Drive, authorities say.

Officers surrounded the home, and after 35 to 40 minutes an adult man and the teen exited the house peacefully.

"They were calling him out, trying to get him to come out, and they were held up in there, they wouldn't come out," said Frank Sandoval, who lives in the neighborhood. "We were out of the line of fire, and they got them to come out."

According to police, the man was sleeping in the home when the juvenile entered the house, fleeing from police.

The man was taken into custody and later released. It's unclear if he will be facing charges, authorities say.

Witnesses say the teen used a weapon during the robberies, but police have not found one.

Six schools were put on secure status at the time of the incident, but that status has since been lifted, officials say. No injuries were reported.

Northside ISD released this statement:

"NISD had six of our schools placed in a SECURE status earlier this morning as SAPD and NISD PD officers investigated vehicles being burglarized. (A secure status means all exterior doors are locked and secured and students are kept inside the building as precautionary measure)

"The schools on secure were Passmore ES, Jones MS, Cable ES, Mary Hull ES, Meadow Village ES, and Jay HS. All campuses have since been released from the secure status as the suspect was apprehended by SAPD. Each of the campuses identified above sent messaging to their communities about the secure. There were a total of 6 vehicles burglarized at Passmore ES. No other school had reports of burglaries."

Police say various charges are still pending.
