Water service returns to three of four San Antonio apartment complexes after SAWS forces managers' hands

SAWS apartment owners had owed tens of thousands on their water bills. This week they took the step of cutting off water to tenants.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Water Systems said Tuesday evening that it had returned water service to three of four apartment complexes whose owners had owed thousands on their bills.

The utility provided a list of multiple companies that hadn't paid up, claiming one of them had outstanding payments of more than $144,000. SAWS previously said they had tried working with the apartment owners to no avail.

KENS 5 received numerous calls from residents of the complexes Tuesday, with some saying they paid their utilities included in their rent.

SAWS acknowledged the action was "unusual" in a statement before going on to say that "we have worked with the owners for months and months without success. Our crews are in the field today turning them off."

Water was cut off Monday night to Roselawn, Westwood Plaza and Serenity Residences apartments. Collectively, the owners of those complexes owed more than $283,000 in water payments.

As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, just one complex – a group of eight units at 410 West Magnolia – still has its water cut off due to unpaid bills.
