Schertz fourth-grade teacher arrested on charges for indecency with a child, police say

He was taken into custody without incident and taken to Guadalupe County Jail.

SAN ANTONIO — A Schertz Elementary teacher was taken into custody after a student was advised by her mother to come forward about an incident with a teacher, according to Schertz Police Department.

The incident took place on March 12 at Schertz Elementary after police officers received a report of a sex offense incident involving a minor.

Officers met with the victim's mother who convinced her daughter to speak about an incident involving a fourth-grade teacher, later identified as 42-year-old Gabriel Cantu of San Antonio, police said.

Detectives were able to secure an arrest warrant for a second degree felony charge of indecency with a child. Cantu was immediately placed on administrative leave, but in a statement district officials now say he won't be returning.

Cantu was taken into custody without incident and transported to Guadalupe County Jail.

Schertz Cibolo Universal City ISD released the following statement regarding the arrest:

"This news is deeply concerning, and this conduct is absolutely unacceptable.  Ensuring the safety and the well-being of our students is, and will always be, our top priority.

This is an ongoing criminal investigation and we will continue to cooperate with the Schertz Police Department.

District administrators were first informed of these allegations by the Schertz Police Department on Tuesday, March 12, during Spring Break.

Mr. Cantu was promptly placed on leave pending investigation, with his access to all technology suspended immediately.  Mr. Cantu will not be returning to SCUC ISD in any capacity.

SCUC ISD will be conducting its own investigation, which includes reporting this conduct to all appropriate agencies.   All parents of current and former students who were directly taught by this teacher will be contacted individually today.

If anyone has questions or information believed to be relevant to this investigation, we urge you to contact the Schertz Police Department immediately at 210-619-1200."
