SAN ANTONIO — According to Southwest ISD, six students were sent to a hospital Wednesday afternoon after a school bus they were riding in crashed into an 18-wheeler on the west side. The bus driver was also hospitalized.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and we wish them a speedy and full recovery," district officials said.
The incident occurred in the area of Loop 1604 and US 90 around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Twenty Scobee Middle School students were onboard, according to SWISD officials, when it collided with the big rig.
Six students were sent to the hospital, as well as the driver. All other students were assessed by first responders before being released back to their families, according to officials.
"We understand the concern and anxiety that an incident like this can cause, and we want to assure you that our school district is working closely with the authorities to investigate the cause of the accident," said district officials.
Marithea Mendez was driving home when she saw the crash.
“I heard that loud boom, I can’t imagine what they’re feeling being inside the bus," Mendez said.
She said several students were shaken up as multiple drivers helped pull them out of the back of the bus before first responders got to the scene.
“I see two siblings getting out hugging each other crying," Mendez said. "Just the entire thing was traumatic."
She provided this dash cam video below of the aftermath of the crash, with debris scattered along the road for several yards.
The district added that they will be providing counsel and support services to the affected students and their families during this challenging time.
"The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. We will continue to ensure that all appropriate safety measures and protocols are in place to protect our students while in our care," district officials said.
Authorities have not yet announced if any charges will be filed.
