One Arkansas woman is set to celebrate her 100th birthday in just a few weeks and she's inviting friends, family, and community members to join her in celebrating the big day.
Amy Barnes Sanders was born in Prescott, Arkansas on August 4, 1924, and has since dedicated her life to her family, community, and her country.
She graduated high school in 1941 and was a student at the Draughon School of Business when she met her husband, Reo Sanders, just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The two got married in 1944 and moved to Little Rock after the war. Soon after, the couple moved to Sherwood and played a key role in the town's development.
Barnes Sanders was the city clerk from 1972 until she retired in 1989. During her time working as city clerk, she became tech-savvy by being able to use the city's first computer. After her retirement, the CALS library was named in her honor, and the legacy has continued with a new library that opened in 2018.
To this day, she remains active in the community as a member of the Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church, the Sylvan Hills Extension Homemaker’s Club, the Sherwood History Committee, and the Jack Evans Senior Center.
She is also a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and is known for her holiday cookies and culinary skills that are loved by many people in the community.
To celebrate her big centenarian milestone, a birthday party will be held at the Amy Sanders Library (10200 Johnson Drive) in Sherwood from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
Friends, family, and community members are all invited to attend the event.
