Man arrested after fatal shooting outside sports bar, officials say

San Antonio police responded to a shooting at the 1900 block of SW Military around 2:22 a.m. on March 14.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was arrested in connection to a fatal shooting in March that happened outside a sports bar on the south side, police said.

Joseph Olivarri was charged with murder, aggravated assault and was reprimanded without bond.

San Antonio police responded to a shooting at the 1900 block of SW Military around 2:22 a.m. on March 14.

According to an arrest affidavit a fight broke out and multiple gunshots were fired in the parking lot of 210 Sports Cantina and Grill across from South Park Mall.

Police said the shooting happened after the fight broke out and a man identified as Joshua Cuellar, 37, was hit in the chest. When officers arrived they attempted lifesaving measures but Cuellar was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, police said.

According to the arrest affidavit recovered 9mm shell casings were collected on scene and put into a national database. The shell casings linked back to two other shootings. The national database suggests the shell casings from all three incidents were likely fired from the same weapon. The shell casings were sent to the Bexar County Criminal Investigation Laboratory for confirmation but the lab results are still pending.

Multiple tipsters also called Crime Stoppers and identified Olivarri as the suspected shooter. The tipsters said Olivarri was bragging about the murder.

Police were also able to identify Olivarri's truck.

Investigators later obtained video footage from the sports bar and were able to identify Olivarri and the victim. The video also shows Olivarri flee the parking lot in his truck right after the shooting.
