Southside homeowner says he is facing hard times after suspected drunk driver destroys home

Police responded to the intersection of Pleasanton Road and W Sayers Avenue early Saturday morning after receiving reports of a vehicle hitting a home.

SAN ANTONIO — A Southside homeowner is now left without a home, after a suspected drunk driver in a truck barreled through his home.  The man says he is lucky to be alive.

“It was horrible an experience that no one would want to go through,” said homeowner Roberto Rocha.

Police said it's the third time this week a vehicle has crashed into a home.

San Antonio Police responded to the intersection of Pleasanton Road and W Sayers Avenue just south of downtown around 1:15 a.m. early Saturday morning after receiving reports of a vehicle hitting a home.

The accident left the home's owner, Roberto Rocha, sifting through what use to be his home. The house was completely destroyed after it was hit by the truck.

"It just went through my bedroom, after that I couldn't get out of the bedroom. I had to force my way out of the door," said Rocha

Rocha said he was awake and had left his phone charging in the living room.

"I was going around to get my phone at the same time, that's when it happened from one bedroom to the living room, a split second that's it," said Rocha.

It's that split second decision that possibly saved him from being seriously injured. The driver first hit a dumpster, pushing it about 30 feet into his home.  It now sits where his bedroom use to be.

"Panic, like what was it, I didn't know. I know it wasn't thunder because there was no rain in the forecast. Next thing I saw was the truck inside the bedroom with the dumpster," said Rocha.

Rocha said the driver got out and asked him not to call police and tried to get away. Rocha said his brothers helped hold him until police were able to make an arrest.

Police said the 43-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was treated by SAFD at the scene. The driver was arrested on DWI charges.

Rocha is now left without a home and said it's hard times right now.

"What am I going to do next?  What's my next step in building this home again," said Rocha.
