St. Patrick's Day: How downtown pubs are preparing for a busy night

An Irish pub on the River Walk is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

SAN ANTONIO — St. Patrick’s Day is known as one of America’s most popular beer drinking holidays. So how are bars preparing for festivities in downtown San Antonio?

St. Patrick's Day is known as a day of celebration and gathering with friends. But for most pubs - days like today feel more like Christmas. If you’re looking for a reason to party look no further than the River Walk.

Karrie Vellejo with Durty Nelly's Irish Pub can hardly contain her excitement.

“We’ve been waiting all year for this,” Vellejo said.

At Durty Nelly's Irish Pub it's no secret that a lot of alcohol will be sold. Andrew Gallimore is the director for food and beverage at Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub.

“We’ll go through about 30 different kegs," Gallimore said. "We’ll go through about 20 to 22 cases of Jameson.”

Vellejo says it’s all hands on deck – all 100 employees - for St Patrick’s Day.

"For sure the team, we would not be as successful without them,” she said.

The Irish pub is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year and the crowd favorite’s momentum isn’t slowing down.

“We’ve got locals as well as people from out of state and out of country that come in,” Gallimore said.

Meanwhile a beer garden a few blocks away is blooming with anticipation. Alli Goeckel is the operations manager for Elsewhere Garden Bar & Kitchen.

“The draw for Elsewhere is to kind of create an experience that you haven’t had before," she said.

Goeckel believes it’s vibrant and eclectic scenery is sure to attract large crowds.

“Hopefully we do what we did yesterday, yesterday we sold about 12 cases of beer about 600 from the drafts," Goeckel said. "And almost about three or four bottles of green dye.

On St. Patrick’s Day why would you wanna be anywhere but ‘Elsewhere’?

“We’re selling clothes, selling alcohol, food, Instagram moments, hammocks on the river," Goeckel said. "It’s a really good place to be on a Saturday or Sunday.”
