'They're not scared of getting in trouble' | Parents react after student hospitalized following fight at Edison High School

In the letter sent by the principal, she wrote that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken, and that could mean a student's mandatory expulsion from campus.

SAN ANTONIO — Parents are concerned after a student was hospitalized following a fight at Thomas Edison High School on Monday.

The school principal sent out a letter Monday, stating there was an altercation between two students at lunch, causing one of the students to need medical attention. In the letter, she assured parents “that his behavior is not tolerated, and we thoroughly investigate all fights.”

A video of the incident has been circulating among students and parents. KENS 5 obtained a copy but is not sharing due to the graphic nature. It shows a student body slamming another student in the ground. The student then appears to be seriously hurt as people around him start calling for help.

Bianca Moreno’s child was walking by when she saw the aftermath of the body slam.

“She saw him on the floor, convulsing and she said he was foaming from the mouth,” Moreno said.

Another father who chose to remain anonymous said he was shocked when he got the email Monday night.

“I saw the email, but I don’t know how it got to that point where nobody could get in there and stop it, I don’t know,” he said.

He said his son had told him there were fights at the school. The father said he witnessed one himself one day while waiting to pick his son up.

“There was a fight, happened real quick right outside on the front steps, but they were pretty quick to break it up though,” he said.

Moreno said her daughter has also complained about fights and has been nervous sending her daughter to school, but she works down the street, which is why she has not moved her.

“In one day, last year they had 11 fights, and my daughter comes home and tells me, 'Mom I’m scared, there’s always fights, and they come out of nowhere and they start hitting you,'” Moreno said.

Both parents said the problem is much different from when they were in school, blaming social media and lack of discipline.

“It’s kind of scary growing up in these times compared to when we did,” the father stated.

Moreno added, “They’re not scared of getting in trouble anymore.”

A family friend said the student who was hurt was released from the hospital and is doing OK. In the letter sent by the principal, she wrote that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken and that could mean mandatory expulsion from campus.
