SAN ANTONIO — Say hello to Eugene, the new support K9 welcomed by the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office.
Eugene is a shepherd-husky mix that was rescued from a local animal shelter, then procured, trained, and later donated by K9s For Warriors to the BCMEO.
K9s for Warriors' mission is to end veteran suicide through the use of highly trained service dogs. The non-profit also collaborates with first responders, law enforcement, and agencies that work closely with them to provide certified therapy dogs through its nationwide Station Dog Program.
“We are grateful to be able to support the BCMEO in this capacity and support their efforts," said Greg Wells, Director of Station Dog Program for K9s For Warriors. "It was an honor for me to be able to meet and get to know the staff as well as attend our handover ceremony.”
Because the nature of the work done by BCMEO is both stressful and graphic in nature, the staff will benefit from having a therapy dog on site.
K9 Eugene will be there to help the staff by giving them comfort and helping their overall well-being.
“I think everyone will get accustomed to him being here, and when they have a stressful time, they will be able to get with Eugene and give him a hug," said Dr. James Wilkerson, Deputy Medical Examiner for BCMEO and one of Eugene’s handlers. “It’s a dual saving mission for both the dog and the person," he added as a message of gratitude for K9s For Warriors.
