SAN ANTONIO — A suspect has been arrested in connection with an assault where an elderly man was thrown down an escalator at North Star Mall in January.
SAPD says 31-year-old Daymein Garcia has been arrested and faces charges of serious bodily injury to the elderly. Garcia is currently in custody at the Travis County jail and awaits extradition to Bexar County jail.
Detectives have been searching for the suspect since the assault that occurred earlier this year.
On Jan. 27, an 81-year-old man was seen on security camera footage being approached by suspects as he was riding an escalator at a North Star Mall Dillard’s. Garcia was then seen throwing the man down the metal steps.
The elderly man suffered severe injuries including a head injury and internal bleeding.
As previously reported, authorities had reason to believe the assault was preceded by a dressing room altercation at the same store.
Police said the man walked into a dressing room he thought was empty until he realized someone was in there and left the dressing room. A girl who was inside the dressing room found her mother and shared what had happened. Afterwards the man was tracked down and the assault on the escalator unfolded.
SAPD said detectives have worked tirelessly with the city’s support to find the suspect involved in the case.
