SAN ANTONIO — Less than two days after a man was gunned down at his workplace, a man has been arrested and charged with capital murder.
Kiavon Funta Eugene Dotson, 21, was arrested early Saturday morning accused of shooting and killing 27-year-old Cesar Garcia.
Officers were called out to the 6900 block of NE Loop 410 Thursday around 4:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting with a hit.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found Garcia’s lifeless body on the stairwell near the entrance of his workplace. An arrest warrant reports that investigators found “several Glock switches in small plastic baggies near the Victim’s body.”
San Antonio Police released surveillance video Friday night that shows Garcia leaving his workplace (which has not been named by police).
According to an arrest warrant, Garcia met up with two men after he got off work.
Surveillance video shows Dotson and the other suspect approach Garcia and when Garcia started walking up the stairs, Dotson “grabbed him from behind and placed a gun to his head,” according to police documents.
Police said Garcia tried to fight off his attackers when the other suspect pulled out a handgun and fired toward Garcia multiple times. Dotson also fired shots at Garcia, according to investigators.
Dotson and the other unnamed suspect then jumped in a car and drove off.
Investigators were able to access Garcia’s cell phone and discovered messages between Garcia and Dotson minutes before the shooting.
Officers were able to identify Dotson from surveillance video and compared the images in the video to a recent mugshot.
According to the arrest warrant, when officers confirmed Dotson’s identity, they went to his last known address and spoke with Dotson’s mother who “was visibly distraught.”
Dotson was later taken into custody at his home, and later confessed his involvement in Garcia’s murder, and identified himself in the surveillance video, according to police documents.
Police said that Dotson also told detectives that the intent was to rob Garcia for some “gun parts,” and the shooting happened during the attempted robbery.
It’s unclear what transpired between Garcia and the suspects that led to Garcia’s death, but police documents report that Garcia was not armed.
Investigators believe a third suspect is involved as the getaway driver. Police documents report the third suspect stayed in the car during the deadly shooting.
Dotson is facing a capital murder charge, his bond set at $500,000.
The other suspects remain at large. One of them was later identified as 20-year-old Ju Von William Philips; he also is wanted for capital murder in Garcia's killing. Crime Stoppers says it's offering a $5,000 rewards for information leading to Philips' arrest.
