Sutherland Springs church could be demolished pending judge's decision

The judge delayed the demolition with a restraining order on July 2 in response to a lawsuit filed by some survivors in May.

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas — The church where 26 people were shot and killed in Sutherland Springs could be demolished pending a judge's decision Monday.

The judge delayed the demolition with a restraining order on July 2 in response to a lawsuit filed by some survivors in May.

The First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs sits as a memorial today with those advocating against it being demolished say they're thankful someone is willing to listen.

This restraining order filed by a judge on July 2 delayed tearing down the building until July 15.

After Monday, another hearing will be held to determine if the restraining order will be extended. In 2021, churchgoers voted 69 to 35 in favor of tearing the building down.

There are some that disagreed saying "church officials strategically removed members they felt were in opposition of the sanctuary."

“Personally it's very heartbreaking because we all feel their spirits are in there." Many are now calling for a revote. The restraining order ends today.

The next course of action could be a hearing to determine if it would be extended.
