SAN ANTONIO — Monday is the deadline to file tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service. If you haven't filed, there are still options, including filing an extension or filing for free under a certain income.
According to the IRS, about one in 10 tax filers requests an extension, which is a quick and easy process. The IRS also says requesting an extension does not make it more likely that you will be audited.
"If you don't have everything together and you need more time to file, you can always file an extension. You can go to IRS.gov to do that. The thing to remember there is just that an extension is an extension of time to file, and not an extension of time to pay," IRS spokesperson Clay Sanford said.
If you owe the IRS and cannot pay by today, an extension does not mean you have more time to pay. They say you can set up an installment plan on their website to help minimize penalties or interest. But, the agency warns to be mindful of scammers.
If you typically receive a refund, there is still time to file a complete tax return. Tax preparation companies offer free software through the "Free File" program for anyone with an annual income of up to $79,000.
The IRS also offers a separate program called the "Direct File Tool," which allows qualifying taxpayers in Texas and other states to file for free if they have a simple tax situation.
