ALAMO HEIGHTS, Texas — A 16-year-old was shot in the neck after police say he and two others were trying to break into cars in the Alamo Heights area Sunday.
Police said two suspects were checking for unlocked vehicles in the 200 block of Wildrose Avenue early Sunday morning and a third suspect was following them in a stolen vehicle to act as a getaway driver.
The suspects were interrupted by a homeowner and his son and the suspects started to take off in the vehicle. Both burglary suspects were armed with handguns and one of them fired two "warning shots" to discourage the residents from coming after them.
The 16-year-old driver was shot in the neck, police said, and there is no word on how serious the injury was. Alamo Heights police say the teen who was shot was already on probation for vehicle burglary and vehicle theft from earlier this month. His probation was reportedly revoked and he is in juvenile detention pending his charges.
Police say the stolen vehicle in this case was unlocked and the keys were left inside, allowing the suspects to easily take off in it. Alamo Heights PD says vehicle burglaries and thefts are increasing and they are seeing more and more people leaving their car doors unlocked. They are urging everyone to keep their car doors locked at all times that you are not in your vehicle.
They also recommend that drivers never leave valuables out in the open of the vehicle, regarless of whether it is locked or unlocked.
