Tenant shot in head, killed by landlord, police say

Police say an argument led to a 37-year-old landlord shooting the 41-year-old tenant in the head. Investigators are now questioning the landlord.

SAN ANTONIO — A tenant was fatally shot by a landlord northwest of downtown Thursday morning.

San Antonio Police officers responded to the 1000 block of West Huisache Avenue around 8:30 a.m. for reports of a shooting in progress.

Police say there was a dispute of some kind between the 37-year-old landlord and 41-year-old tenant, later identifed as David Beck. Officials say both men had guns drawn but only the landlord pulled the trigger, striking the tenant in the head outside the home. Officials say the tenant died on the way to the hospital.

Police took the landlord into custody and are investigating whether he acted in self-defense.

Edward Gonzalez, who lives across the street from where the shooting took place, recalls hearing numerous gunshots. His sister called 911.

"I had just entered the restroom and right when I sat down, I heard a gunshot and a lady scream, and then like maybe 10 seconds later I heard five more shots," Gonzalez said.

At least five people live at the residence where the shooting occurred, according to police.

Police have responded to 1030 West Huisache Avenue more than 17 times in 2023. There were numerous disturbance calls and two reported burglaries at the home, according SAPD's calls for service list.

The shooting remains under investigation.

No charges have been filed at this time.
