Authorities ask for help solving cold case of man killed on his 18th birthday

Wilbert "Willie" Vázquez-Lopez died on his birthday, just hours after getting shot on his porch.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) is asking for the public's help in solving a 2022 homicide.

According to TCSO, Wilbert "Willie" Vázquez-Lopez was shot on Aug. 19, 2022, at a mobile home park on Menchaca Road in South Austin.

After receiving a call about the apparent shooting, deputies arrived at the home at approximately 11:40 p.m., where they found Vázquez-Lopez on the porch suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.

Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) transported him to a hospital, where he died just after midnight on his 18th birthday.

On Thursday, law enforcement held a press briefing asking for anyone with additional information to come forward.

"I want them not to lose hope," Sheriff Sally Hernandez said. "I want them to get the answers they need."

Since the initial shooting, investigators obtained footage from nearby homes showing a dark Sedan and the sound of three gunshots, followed by two car doors closing. Witnesses also claimed they saw two men enter the dark vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Jennifer Boland, the lead detective on the case, said officials believe two male suspects are involved. Per the original investigation, detectives also feel that Vázquez-Lopez was specifically targeted.

Still, the motive remains unclear.

"It's time to come forward and give this family some answers and some closure for losing their loved one," Boland said.

Anyone with additional details is asked to call the TCSO Tip Line at 512-854-1444 or the Austin Police Department TIPS Hotline at 512-472-8477.
