AUSTIN, Texas — Texans could be paying more for their Mega Millions tickets in 2025.

Documents show the Texas Lottery Commission wants to make changes to Mega Millions in Texas to conform the play with recently adopted changes.

Those changes include raising the prices of a ticket from $2 to $5, changing the amount of numbers available for the Mega Ball, removing the Megaplier and Just the Jackpot features and more.

In 2022, Mega Millions officials revealed they were considering changing the price point and restructuring the game to keep up with changes to Powerball while maintaining the uniqueness of Mega Millions.

When will the changes begin?

The Texas Lottery says Mega Millions will stay the same until April 5, 2025, with the first drawing under new rules taking place April 8, 2025.

Officials expect the changes to generate increased interest by offering players the potential for larger jackpots, improved chances of winning through better odds and a new embedded multiplier feature that offers players the chance to increase non-jackpot prices up to 10 times.

Texas Lottery Controller Sergio Rey said they've also determined there will be no significant fiscal impact for state or local governments because of the rule changes. They also don't expect any adverse effects on small businesses, rural communities or employment.
