Texas Outdoors: The art of not being an artist

Spin Art Nation is the perfect thing for those of us whose inner artist was never born!

SAN ANTONIO — I have wanted to be able to draw or paint all of my life. I can see art in my mind, I know art when I see it. I appreciate art. But, somewhere between my brain and my fingers, the wires are not connected. I can't draw Stickman art!

When someone showed me Spin Art Nation, I thought maybe there was hope for me after all! It's a unique, yet simplistic way of creating art that anyone can do it.

"So it’s not like a traditional fine art painting, where you have to worry about one wrong thing and it’s going to ruin the whole thing, it’s a constant process with this," says owner Peter Carollo.

It's as simple of locking, whatever size canvass you want, into a wheeled device...adding whatever colors you want to use... and turning a crank. All around the studio you can see examples of paintings people have created and left to dry. You can actually buy some if you'd like.

"You can create any type of style you want, and if you don't like it, add more paint and start over." Carollo says.

It's kind of addicting once you start. My attempt changed dramatically from when I started, to when I ended. I won't say finished, because I'm not really sure I'm finished with it.

I wanted something that would match the colors of our kitchen, so I mixed some paints together and thought I had achieved the desired effect. I was quite proud of myself after the painting had come out of the dryer. When I took it home, it matched fairly well, but my wife said I needed to add a little more blue.

So it looks like I'll be going back to Spin Art Nation. This time I think I'll take the kids along and let them create something for each of their rooms. Maybe my wife too, so this time I know the colors match!
