Texas Skateland engulfed in flames on July 4

Several users on social media expressed their sorrow that their childhood skating rink, Texas Skateland, was engulfed in flames on July 4.

HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — A beloved roller skating rink in Harker Heights was engulfed in flames Thursday, July 4.

Facebook users in the area shared photos and videos of the large plumes of smoke coming out of Texas Skateland, located at 205 Cox Dr. In them, the Harker Heights Fire Department was seen battling the fire just before 2 p.m.

"My heart just sunk," wrote Michelle Atkins after she saw the fire in person. "... This was our childhood! Such a huge devastating loss."

Texas Skateland is owned by Donald and Shirley Morken. They purchased the property in 1981 and have been running the skating rink ever since.

According to Texas Skateland's Facebook page, they were closed to observe July 4. 

6 News reached out to the Harker Heights Fire and Police Departments to find out more about what happened, but we have yet to hear back due to it being a holiday.
