SAN MARCOS, Texas One student has died and another is hospitalized after jumping from a Texas State University dormitory first-floor window and fallingsix to eightfeet.
School spokesman Mark Hendricks says 24-year-old sophomore Eirin Ann Hicks of Temple suffered head injuries in the incident around 2 a.m. Tuesday at Laurel Hall. She died hours later at University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin. Hicks was a resident adviser.
A freshman, 19-year-old Kristin McCreery of the Houston area, remained hospitalized Wednesday with back injuries. Hospital spokeswoman Ellen Decareau says McCreery was in fair condition.
Hendricks says a male student who also jumped from the window, above a hill, wasn t hurt. He was the one that reportedlyflagged down a passing campus police officer when he noticed the girls were in trouble. The officer then called for ambulances.
Campus officials say Hicks, a sophomore from Temple, was studying mass communication, and was a residentadviserat Texas State University.
McCreery is a freshman from Houston who is studying communication design.
Tuesday night students held a candlelight vigil on the campus Quad.
University police were interviewing students to determine what happened.
Counselors were available at TSU in San Marcos, located 30 miles south of Austin.
