What you need to know about 2024 tax-free weekend

This year’s sales tax holiday starts Friday and goes through midnight Sunday.

SAN ANTONIO — The State of Texas is trying to make it even easier to finish back-to-school shopping this weekend.

This year’s sales tax holiday starts Friday and continues through midnight Sunday.

There is a bunch of items perfect for students preparing for the upcoming school year including backpacks, bags, clothing, shoes and school supplies.

And, if you do go shopping this weekend remember there is no limit on the amount of items you can buy but your purchases need to be less than a hundred dollars to be exempt from taxes.

The deal also applies to online shopping and officials explained the exemption will apply automatically when you check-out.

But, if you do go the online route experts like Karen Hudgins with the Texas Comptroller’s office advises consumers to be mindful of shipping costs.

“Shoppers should be aware that shipping costs, delivery, handling charges count towards that items purchased price. So, for example if you buy a pair of jeans online for $95, that's under that $100 threshold, but if there's a $10 shipping charge...that would be added to the jeans purchased price bringing it to $105 so you would have to pay tax on jeans since its over that $100 threshold,” Hudgins said.
