ATASCOSA, Texas — The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office said a man was shot and killed by a deputy sheriff responding to a domestic disturbance call Friday night.
According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies had been called to the residence in the Royal Oaks Subdivision off of FM 476 for similar domestic disturbance calls on multiple occasions in the past.
On Saturday, a responding deputy sheriff made contact with the woman at the residence who reported her husband, saying he was arguing and punching the walls. That’s when a male suspect came to the door and was ordered by the deputy to come outside.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Richard Albert Viscarra Jr., allegedly grabbed a large butcher knife and advanced toward the deputy, ignoring commands to stop and drop the knife.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Viscarra walked down the steps and positioned the knife in a “aggressive manner” while advancing towards the deputy, forcing the deputy to fire his weapon.
The deputy reportedly fired four shots at the man. Life-saving efforts were performed by deputies on scene but Viscarra was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s wife told deputies that Viscarra had threatened suicide by cop.
The incident is being investigated by Texas Rangers.
The Sheriff’s office says the 34-year-old deputy is a 4 and a half-year veteran law enforcement officer and has been placed on administrative leave.
