Deputy killed in crash caused by distracted driver, officials say

CAMERON COUNTY, Texas — A Cameron County deputy was killed Monday after his patrol car was rear-ended by a distracted driver in Brownsville, officials say.

DPS is investigating the two-vehicle crash that happened around 6:45 p.m. on State Highway 48 near Marine Way Road, in Brownsville, Cameron County.  

Officials say that Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia was in a patrol unit parked on the highway when a driver in a white Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended the patrol unit.  

The deputy was taken to a local hospital in Brownville, where he died from his injuries.  

The man driving the Chevrolet admitted to officers that he was distracted while looking at his phone and driving.  

Deputies suspect the driver was driving under the influence and will be tested.

DPS Troopers are continuing their investigation.
