EL PASO, Texas — Former San Antonio mayor and current Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro visited the U.S.-Mexico border to denounce what he calls "President Trump's lies about the border and immigration" ahead of the president's visit to El Paso.
"Tonight, President Donald Trump is going to El Paso, Texas to create a circus of fear and paranoia, like he always does, to tell lies about the border and about immigration," Castro says in a video released Monday to the candidate's YouTube page. "Don't take the bait."
Castro's team says the video was filmed from the Eagle Pass, TX border crossing where his grandmother entered the U.S. as a seven-year-old Mexican orphan.
In his State of the Union address last week, Trump said a "powerful barrier" had cut crime rates in El Paso. But many El Pasoans bristle at the prospect of their home becoming a border wall poster child.
