SAN ANTONIO-- The City of San Antonio has placed eight new signs along Quintana Road on the south side to prevent semi-truck drivers from cutting through that busy neighborhood area.
The "No Thru Truck Traffic" signs were up in time for the first day of school.
It's estimated 1000 school children cross Quintana Road and while there is a crosswalk residents were concerned about 40 to 50 semi-trucks that used the road as a shortcut. On the first day of enforcement only two truck drivers chose to violate the new rule.
"You have a lot of students darting back and forth and you just don't want a truck who is slow to stop and heavier to be so prevalent in this neighborhood," said Councilman Rey Saldaña. "So we're going to relieve that with enforcement and education so SAPD officers will actually be able to ticket 18-wheelers in and out of here and it's not that we don't like 18-wheelers we just want to make sure this area is safe especially during school zones in the morning and afterwards."
Truck drivers are supposed to use the Frio City Road ramp established in 2007 to avoid residential areas.
Traffic tickers for truck drivers who violate the "No Thru Traffic Signs" could be fined up to $200.
