San Antonio's most congested highway stretch ranks just 27th worst in state

This list is part of Texas A&M Transportation Institute's annual study of the worst traffic jams in the Lone Star State.

TEXAS, USA — It's no secret that Texas traffic can be a killer. Many Texans have traveled through the Lone Star State frustrated and angry, particularly with the major traffic jams we endure in the major metro areas.

That's why it's surprising to learn that San Antonio isn't home to any of the top 10 most congested roadways in Texas. In fact, the city's roadways start much lower on the list.

If you live in the San Antonio area and have to go to work, school, or even run an errand between the hours of 6 and 9 a.m. or 4 and 7 p.m. you must prepare yourself for traffic delays. Plus, you should probably become comfortable with cars sometimes jammed together along I-35, Loop 410 or Loop 1604.

However, according to Texas A&M's annual study of the top 10 worst traffic jams in the Lone Star State, San Antonio's roadways don't even make the list. The Alamo City's most congested roadway doesn't appear until No. 27.

This year, Houston is home to six of the 10 most congested roadways in Texas - with 610 West Loop found to have the worst traffic jams in the Lone Star State.

Top 10 Most Congested Roadways in Texas

  • #1 610 West Loop - Houston area
  • #2  I-69/59 from I-10 to 288 - Houston area
  • #3 SS 366 between US 75 and N. Beckley Avenue - Dallas area
  • #4 IH 35 between US 290W/SH 71 (Ben White Boulevard) and US 290E - Austin area
  • #5 IH 69/US 59 between IH 610 West and SH 288 - Houston area
  • #6 IH 610 North between IH 45 North and Katy Freeway - Houston area
  • #7 Katy Freeway between IH 610 West and IH 45 North - Houston area
  • #8 IH 45 between IH 10/US 90 and IH 610 South - Houston area
  • #9 IH 35W between SH 183 and IH 30 - Dallas area
  • #10 US 75 between Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway and SS 366 - Dallas area

The list is complied using a variety of data collected by TAMU's Transportation Institute.

The institute claims Houston's expanding population and the fact that most residents prefer driving their own vehicle as opposed to public transportation can be a contributing factor.

San Antonio's most congested roadway, according to the study, is I-35 between Loop 410 and Loop 1604 on the northeast side.

Recent data shows that Texas drivers spent 7% longer sitting in traffic last year than the previous year, but the numbers are still below pre-pandemic levels.

TAMU'S annual report helps plan transportation projects and the construction of roadways and freeways.

San Antonio was home to 12 roadways on the Top 100 Most Congested Roads in Texas in 2022.
