Sutherlands Springs church to remain open to visitors Tuesday before demolition work begins

The site of the 2017 mass shooting where 26 people were killed is set to be demolished, according to officials.

SAN ANTONIO — Tuesday is the last day to visit the Sutherland Springs church that was the site of a deadly shooting in November 2017.

The First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs has since been turned into a memorial for the 26 people killed.

Members of the church voted 69-35 to tear down the old church building back in 2021, a move that was not popular among some members of the congregation.

Some of the survivors have filed a temporary restraining order to block the demolition. A judge is set to decide Tuesday if this order will be granted.

Until a decision is made demolition work is expected to begin. In an email to the community and parishioners, Terrie Smith, president of the Sutherland Springs Community Association, said First Baptist is preparing to tear down its memorial sanctuary.

As a result, the entire building has been closed off.

The sanctuary will remain open for a final visit Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for anyone who would like to pay the sanctuary a final visit prior to its demolition.
