Caught on camera: Thieves take off with stolen ATV gifted by local business owner to his son

The thieves broke into the southwest side business to steal the Can-Am off-road vehicle that the owner says is worth several thousands of dollars.

SAN ANTONIO — A dream purchase for a San Antonio teenager was gone in minutes. The teen's father, who is also a business owner, said thieves made off with the Can-Am off-road vehicle.

Issac Ortiz shared surveillance videos of the reported theft that happened in the early morning hours of June 7 at Economy Signs, located at 2034 Frio City Road.

In the videos, you see a car that appears to be a Mercedes-Benz, pull into the business and back up into the lot. Prior to this, Ortiz said the thieves broke the locks. At one point, you see a man with a face covering get out of the car and make his way to the ATV. Seconds later, another person with a sleeveless shirt gets out of the car and then the two push the ATV forward.

"They broke the lock, went in there, pulled the ATV out and figured out a way to turn it on," Ortiz said.

They then drove away with his property that he says is worth several thousands of dollars. He later filed a theft report with San Antonio Police.

Ortiz said the property was stolen while the family was out of town for a baseball tournament. He said his son is bummed because he only got to use it once.

"It was a dream for years to be able to purchase one, and we purchased it and it was stolen," he said.

Ortiz is left in disbelief and said the bright yellow ATV has distinct characteristics.

"They run like $20,000 and I was able to buy it for close to half," he said. "Ours is lifted with rims."

The owner also added that his family and workers are on edge.

"It is kind of scary knowing that people can just break the gate and come into private property with no regard," he said. "If they can go into our property and break in so rapidly with no regard, I can only imagine what else they are doing in San Antonio."
