Thieves steal from special needs baseball league

The thieves stole about $5,000 worth of sound equipment used during the games to present players and for dance sessions on game day.

Thieves broke into a storage unit and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment from a baseball league for children with special needs.

Maury Vasquez volunteers as the league's announcer. He says he was in disbelief when he arrived at the Miracle League of San Antonio field to prepare for game day on Saturday and found the storage unit open and a gaping hole in the fence next to it.

Vasquez says the thieves stole about $5,000 worth of sound equipment used during the games to present players and for dance sessions.

"They dance and they like to hear their name,” Vasquez said. “They’ll tell me what to call them, not their name. They have another name. 'I'm not Michael, I'm MC Mikey.'"

The Miracle League of San Antonio gives children with mental or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball.

"Our families our players they have endured enough and this is their playground this is their getaway, why us," Vasquez said.

Despite the drawback, the three games scheduled on Saturday went on as usual, just a little quieter.

The last games are scheduled for June 9, and Vasquez says they've filed a claim with the insurance company.

"We are going to be back next Saturday and it's going to be baseball, Miracle League style, one more time," Vasquez said.

According to Vasquez, a fundraiser was not set up to make up for the loss but people are welcome to donate to the foundation.
