5 things to do this weekend: Father’s Day and Juneteenth celebrations

This Father's Day weekend won't be short of events to get the whole family out of the house.

SAN ANTONIO — From festivals to outdoor markets and parades, this weekend will be stacked with activities you won’t want to miss. 

Whether you’re looking for some family-friendly fun to celebrate dad this Father’s Day, wanting to take part in the city’s Juneteenth celebrations or all of the above, we’ve got you covered with our top picks for the upcoming weekend of June 14-16.

Celebrating freedom

The 25th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Parade, commemorating when the last slaves were declared free in 1865, will begin its route from Sam Houston High School on Saturday morning. The parade will then wind its way to Comanche Park for a festival commemorating the holiday, kicking off 2024's Juneteenth events happening across the city prior to its official observance on Wednesday.

When: Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Official Juneteenth Festival

As the parade comes to an end, Comanche Park will be the place to be for the Official Juneteenth Festival, presented by the San Antonio Juneteenth Commission. Bring the whole family out for this free community event and enjoy an evening of food, activities and live music, including performances by Heatwave and Florida-based pop group 12Eleven Band.

When: Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Take dad out to the ballgame

If you’re still stuck on ideas of what to do for dad this Father’s Day, consider taking him out to a San Antonio Missions game as the team takes on the Corpus Christi Hooks at Nelson Wolff Stadium. This Sunday’s game highlight is a Father’s Day celebration. Dads and their kids will be allowed on the field for a pregame catch.

When: Sunday, June 16 at 6:05 p.m.

Where: Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium (5757 U.S. 90)

Cost: Tickets can be purchased here and run between $8 to $30

Explore a new cosmic art exhibit

Centro Cultural Aztlan will unveil its first ever dual exhibit this Friday, showcasing the “stellar” artwork commemorating cosmic events and exploring our collective cosmology. The Midsummer Solstice: A Celebration of Life, Balance and Renewal will open in the new gallery space together with "The Project: MASA Cosmic Couture Portrait Collection" for a limited time.

The exhibition kicks off with an opening reception including refreshments and live music. It's free and open to the public to view until Saturday, July 20.

When: Friday, June 14 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (opening reception);  exhibit on display Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until July 20

Get a peachy-keen taste of Fredericksburg

Head over to The Shops at La Cantera for a taste of the Texas Hill Country on Saturday as The Fredericksburg Convention and Visitor Bureau hosts the Fredericksburg Peach Fest

Peach growers and merchants will sell prized fresh peaches, wine, jellies, jams, salsas, soaps, lotions and more peach-inspired products.

When: Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Starting Saturday, La Villita Historic Arts Village will transform into a vibrant marketplace featuring local vendors, music, guest artists from Mexico and live cooking demonstrations.

La Villita Market Days: A Celebration of Culture and Community will be held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and run until the end of the year. The event is part of a community-wide collaboration to revitalize La Villita as a cultural arts and culinary center

Finally, here are a couple more Juneteenth celebrations you should know about. The 4th Annual SA Juneteenth Block Party & Fair will be held Saturday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Crockett Park. Meanwhile, the Pan African Cultural Community hosts the Juneteenth Buy Black Market and Celebration on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Our Place Adult Day Care, located on 3455 Martin Luther King Drive.
