Thousands protest their property tax bills in Bexar County

If you want to cut your property tax bill, you need to act fast. The deadline to protest is midnight Tuesday, but here is how you can beat that deadline.

Bexar Appraisal District

It just may be the hottest hangout in Bexar County right now. Good luck finding a parking space – because there’s a steady stream of taxpayers at the Bexar Appraisal District with a common goal: pay less!

“All it is, is you check a couple of boxes on the form. If you have any other reason you state that," Mike Colvard said waiting to file his protest. "You sign the form and submit your form. It’s pretty simple.”

“They’re going to come back in August and try to get the square footage correct and take it from there and see if I can get it reduced,” said Mike English who is already seeing some success. “If you think that your property taxes are too high, it’s worth the time to come up here. The people are friendly. They’ll work with you.”

They expect about 90-thousand people to protest, so it takes a while for all those cases to be resolved.

“We send you a letter that has two dates on it. One is for an informal meeting with an appraiser. If you can arrive at an acceptable value at that point, you’re finished," said Mary Kieke from the Bexar Appraisal District. "There’s a second date on it. If you can’t come to an agreement after the informal, you’ll have a formal hearing a week later.”

If you’re planning to file this year, remember, Monday is the Memorial Day holiday. That is why the online deadline of Tuesday is so important.
