Three men arrested after shooting at off-duty detective's vehicle on northwest side, SAPD says

Police Chief William McManus said an off-duty detective was at his daughter's apartment complex when he saw someone breaking into his truck.

SAN ANTONIO — Three men were arrested after shooting at an off-duty San Antonio detective on the northwest side, police said.

The shooting happened around 1:30p.m. at an apartment complex on Camino Villa near Bandera Road.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said an off-duty detective was at his daughter's apartment complex helping her move when he saw someone breaking into his truck.  McManus said the detective approached the suspect when another suspect, who was sitting in a stolen vehicle parked near the detective's truck, started shooting.

The detective returned fire, striking nearby cars, police say. No one was hurt.

The three suspects have yet to be identified.

According to McManus, the suspects had also broken into another vehicle and stolen a handgun that was left inside. It's unclear if they used that same gun to shoot at the detective.

McManus advised the public not to leave guns or dangerous weapons in their cars.

Sabrina Reyes has lived at the complex for almost five years and was never concerned with car break-ins before.

“There’s never any bad stuff that happens here," Reyes said. "There’s never anything crazy.”

Reyes pointed out that these suspects went after the wrong person.

“They literally came in and messed around and found out for sure," Reyes said.
