Traffic stop leads to SAPD officer shooting and killing a man, Chief McManus says

Police say the suspect had a gun in his hand and one of the officers shot the suspect in the torso.

SAN ANTONIO — According to San Antonio authorities, an early-morning traffic stop ended in gunfire when police fatally shot a man on the city's south side.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Thursday in the 700 block of East Southcross Boulevard. SAPD Chief William McManus says a physical fight ensued between officers and the victim, later identified as 42-year-old Jervon Harper, when they noticed he had a gun.

Police say the two officers approached the vehicle during the traffic stop and tried to get Harper to come out of his vehicle, leading to a struggle.

Police say Harper had a gun in his hand when one of the officers, Edgardo Valladares – who has been with SAPD for three years – shot him in the torso. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"The sound provided by Chief McManus at the scene of the OIS, is preliminary information, and could change as the investigation continues. It seems Harper was out on bond for an evading arrest offense that occurred late last year. Harper was not on probation," said SAPD Public Information Officer Ricardo Guzman.

This is already the third shooting involving San Antonio police officers in 2024.
