SCHERTZ, Texas — A young man was hit by a train and killed after police say he stepped onto the tracks in front of a moving train.
It happened just before 8 a.m. Thursday morning near FM 78 and FM 3009 in Schertz.
Officials with Union Pacific railroad reported that a man stepped onto the train tracks as the train approached. The man was between the ages of 17 and 20 and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man's identity has not been released. The tracks were closed at multiple crossings during the initial investigation and cleared at approximately 10:10 a.m.
“That this is a tragic accident that may have been avoidable, and we are working diligently to identify the victim so we can notify next of kin," said Schertz Police Chief Jim Lowery. "As a reminder, walking along or crossing railroad tracks should always be avoided as it is not only dangerous, but also illegal. Pedestrians should only cross railroad tracks at designated crossing zones.”
This is a developing story.
